Mykhailo Kostiuk, a farmer in the village of Banyunyn, Lviv region, has established a self-service store and a large black walnut plantation, spreading over almost 40 hectares, which is perhaps the largest in Ukraine. The walnut wood is highly valued for its decorative properties, found in expensive cars and yachts. Despite not yet profiting from the walnut trees, which will be ready in 30 years, he plans to sell seedlings for EU11. From one hectare, he expects to earn around EU3 million from the wood. Besides walnuts, he also grows a variety of fruits and vegetables, and is experimenting with mycorrhization, a fungus-plant symbiotic relationship, to improve growth and yield, particularly in truffles. This method has led to a 60 cm increase in walnut seedlings in a year. The farmer also sells seedlings outside Ukraine and grows a diverse range of fruits and flowers on the plantation.
