Provisional data for January and February 2024 show a 20.19% increase in fruit and vegetable imports by Greece compared to the same period in 2023, totaling 128,964 tonnes. The imports were led by potatoes from Egypt, bananas from Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Guatemala, onions from Egypt, India, and Austria, and apples from North Macedonia, Poland, and Serbia. Other significant imports included mushrooms, kiwis, peppers, and tomatoes. The Association of Greek Companies Exporting Fruit, Vegetables and Juices (Incofruit-Hellas) has expressed concern over the rise in imports from non-EU countries and is calling for EU trade agreements to include 'mirror clauses' to ensure equal standards and prevent unfair competition.
