The Ministry of Agriculture in Indonesia is taking steps to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar consumption by 2028, as reported. This includes increasing production, productivity, and quality of cane/sugar, identifying new land for sugar cane planting, revitalizing sugar factories, and improving partnerships between sugar mills and farmers. The Ministry is also exploring the production of non-cane sugar from stevia and palm sugar. In 2022, Indonesia saw an increase in sugar production and milled sugar cane area and productivity, despite lower yields. There is plans to start the 2023 milling season in May – June 2023, with 59 active sugar factories. The Agrosolutions Program by PT Pupuk Kaltim is expected to meet the fertilizer needs of sugar cane farmers, contributing to increased production and productivity.
