In November to early December of 2024, Vietnam witnessed a significant surge in pangasius farm prices, with both fry and adult fish reaching their annual highs. This increase is attributed to a combination of heightened market demand and challenges in supply, including a 40%-50% decrease in fish eggs and a low survival rate of fry due to lower water temperatures. The price hike is particularly noticeable in the adult fish category, with sizes exceeding 1.2 kg commanding over 30,000 VND (about 1.18 USD) per kg for the first time since 2023. Despite a slowdown in trading volume due to raw material supply constraints, strong export market demand, especially from China for the Spring Festival, has offset an 8% monthly drop in Vietnam's overall pangasius harvest to 120,000 tons in November. Meanwhile, international prices for pangasius fillets have risen for the EU market and remained stable for the US market, reflecting varied demand dynamics in these regions.
