India has become the world's largest exporter of gherkins, shipping over 1.23 lakh tonnes with a value of $ 114 million during the April-October 2020-21 period. The country has surpassed $ 200 million in exports of agricultural processed products, mainly gherkins, in the last financial year. Gherkin cultivation, processing, and exports in India began in the early 1990s and now accounts for nearly 15% of the world's production, being exported to over 20 countries. The process is carried out under contract farming by around 90,000 small and marginal farmers in states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The gherkins are exported as industrial raw material in bulk and as ready-to-eat products, with around 51 major companies involved in their production and export.
