India has extended the duty-free import period for yellow peas until October 2024, building on previous extensions from the initial March 2024 end-date. This move, aimed at stabilizing pulse prices, follows a 50% duty on these imports from Canada and Russia since 2017. Despite domestic production and efforts to control hoarding, India's dependence on pulse imports has grown, with the 2023-24 imports nearly doubling to USD 3.74 billion and surpassing 45 lakh tonnes. The government is also looking to establish long-term contracts with Brazil and Argentina to address the rising demand.
