India is set to increase its vegetable oil imports by around 14.37 million tonnes in the 2022-23 oil year, up from 14.07 million tonnes in the previous year, with palm oil imports expected to rise to 9.3 million tonnes. Sunflower oil imports are also anticipated to rise in the short-term due to the end of the tariff rate quota in April 2023. Domestic production of vegetable oils is expected to increase to 9.68 million tonnes, driven by higher production of soyabean and mustard crops. The government may need to take steps to limit the import of refined palm oil due to potential impacts on the local manufacturing industry.
