Indonesia is the world's largest palm oil exporter, contributing 4.5% to its GDP and employing over 16 million people. Despite concerns about deforestation, the country has seen a significant decrease, with deforestation for industrial palm oil at its lowest in a decade. However, certain regions like Kalimantan continue to face high rates of forest conversion for palm oil production. There are also concerns about the potential impact of palm oil production on remaining intact forests. Despite these challenges, the industry has made strides towards zero-deforestation commitments, with over 85% of observed palm oil exports traded by companies with such commitments. Domestic consumption of palm oil in Indonesia is on the rise, driven by the biodiesel and oleochemical industries, presenting new challenges and opportunities for sustainable production.
