Nigeria's industrial fishing sector has reached a significant milestone with all 23 inspected trawlers meeting the technical compliance requirements for Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs), achieving a 100% compliance rate. This inspection, conducted by a U.S. TEDs Inspection Team on September 12 and 13, 2024, marks an improvement from the previous 98% score. Led by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy under Adegboyega Oyetola, this initiative aims to enhance shrimp exports to the U.S. and E.U. markets, boosting foreign exchange earnings. The successful compliance is expected to open new market opportunities for Nigerian shrimp and enhance the country's reputation in marine conservation and sustainable fishing practices.
