The National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (INIFAP) is developing new varieties of hibiscus flowers, including Estrella Costeña and Patriota, to enhance the productivity and competitiveness of crops for producers. These varieties, which are being crossed with Creole-type plants, are known for their high yield and resistance to diseases. The Estrella Costeña variety is an excellent option for the dry tropical climate, while the Patriota variety is tolerant to the Pata Prieta disease. Both varieties are rich in essential nutrients and vitamin C, and have health benefits such as detoxifying properties, regulating blood pressure, and reducing cholesterol levels. INIFAP is making these new varieties available to producers to improve the profitability and sustainability of hibiscus cultivation.
