The Director-General of Thailand's Department of Internal Trade, Mr. Wattanasak Sueaiam, has reassured the public that the recent surge in chili prices is temporary, attributed to low productivity due to bad weather and delayed shipping caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the higher prices, there is no actual shortage of chili, as shown by sales in wholesale and retail markets. The situation is expected to improve in February, with large plantations in Ubon Ratchathani and Sisaket provinces expected to harvest, leading to a drop in prices. The department will continue to monitor the situation and has instructed commercial operators in Nakhon Ratchasima to distribute chili from produce or wholesale markets to areas experiencing high prices.
