The Shetland pelagic fleet has made significant investments in new vessels and advanced fish handling technology, leading to environmental benefits and aiding the Scottish food sector's progress towards net-zero targets. Despite challenges due to a quota shares dispute, the fleet, which is nearing the end of a renewal cycle, continues to lead in catching premium mackerel, herring, and blue whiting with minimal carbon emissions. In 2023, UHI Shetland, in collaboration with the SPFA and the Scottish Government's Marine Directorate, processed thousands of fish and otoliths from these fisheries, contributing to the assessment and management of commercial fish stocks.
