Traditional terms such as steak, schnitzel, burger, hamburger, sausage, or egg yolk should only be allowed if the products are of animal origin. This proposal by the EPP representatives in the European Parliament is set to be voted on at the end of October, reports Agrarheute. The euphoria around alternative meat has faded. The Members of the European Parliament from the group want clear regulation on the use of these terms. Using these terms only for real meat ensures honest labeling, protects farmers, and preserves Europe's culinary traditions, says rapporteur Céline Boulay (EPP). According to the EPP, lab-grown meat is not only a complete departure from the norm but also a threat to traditional agriculture and the production of real food, the heart of European agriculture. Farmers deserve fair treatment, and consumers deserve clarity, argues the EPP in its proposal. We must reserve the term "burger" for meat; vegetarian products deserve their own name, adds Boulay. ...
