This year, domestic consumers and processors can expect a smaller plum harvest than usual. According to the forecasts made during a professional day organized by the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the Fruit Production Research Center of the Horticultural Science Institute of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE), a harvest of between 40,000 and 50,000 tons is expected – a noticeable decline compared to the usual average of 60,000 tons. According to the professional forum, the country is divided in terms of plum production. In the northeastern regions, which account for less than half of the growing areas, a medium or good harvest is expected, depending on the variety. Conversely, in the central and western parts of the country – such as Bács-Kiskun, Pest County, and Transdanubia – farmers expect weak or only occasionally medium yields.
