Netherlands: It may be advisable to respond promptly to tightening of standards in North Brabant

After July 1, the standard for dairy cattle will increase from 7 kilos to 6 kilos of ammonia for companies that practice grazing and to 5 kilos for companies that keep their cows in stables all year round. New standards will also apply to veal calves, suckler cows, beef bulls, dairy goats, rabbits and some categories of poultry. Because the obligation to apply low-emission systems for dairy farming and calves has been postponed until January 1, 2026, many entrepreneurs are currently not busy adapting a stable and obtaining a permit. A company that wants to continue to meet the province's requirement and is going to install a low-emission system before July 1, 2026, will have to submit a permit application beforehand. If an application is submitted after July 1, 2024, the stricter standards apply and there will then be less choice from the various stable systems.
