In 2020, Russian fishermen achieved a post-Soviet record by catching 313 thousand tons of Iwasi sardines, a pelagic fish species resumed from a 25-year hiatus. The industry predicts a potential production of up to 1 million tons in the next decade. The Strategy for the Development of the Fisheries Industry until 2030 aims to increase the production of pelagic fish species to 650 thousand tons, with at least 15 medium-tonnage vessels to be involved in the Iwashi fishery. The catches will be used for both food and industrial products, and there is potential for export growth. Iwashi is known for its tender meat and high content of healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
