The Jamaican Ministry of Industry, Trade, Agriculture and Fisheries (MICAF) has reopened its borders to allow the import of potatoes and onions due to increasing demand in the economy. This decision comes after calls from politicians and the business community, following an initial temporary ban on agricultural imports in April to protect the local market. The lift on the ban is expected to increase competition in the market. However, MICAF stated that they were unaware of the concerns about the market position of local products and that the import volumes will be determined based on demand.
