January Fishery Exports Sluggish…Tuna and Oysters Sharply Decline

It was reported that domestic fishery product exports in January were somewhat sluggish. According to the ‘Monthly Fishery Product Export Trends’ data from the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), the export value of our country’s fishery products in January was recorded at USD 210 million, down 13.1% from the same period last year. The main cause was the sluggish exports to major markets such as Japan, China, ASEAN, and the European Union (EU). In particular, it was analyzed that the sharp decline in demand for major items such as tuna and oysters had a major impact on the overall export decrease. Exports to Japan amounted to USD 38 million, down 28.1% from the same period last year. In particular, seaweed exports decreased by 19.3% year-on-year due to the exhaustion of demander allocations and shortage of trading company allocations.
