Japan's scallop exports have seen a surge despite a ban from China, with the US, Taiwan, China, and Southeast Asia becoming more important markets. The average export price of Japanese frozen scallop raw materials increased to 239 yen per kilogram in the first half of 2024, with a notable increase in exports to Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. However, overall exports fell by 52% due to the loss of the Chinese market. The average export price to the US and Taiwan also increased, and the Sea of Okhotsk in Hokkaido is the main supplier of scallops. Overall seafood exports from Japan were down 18% and 23% from January to June 2024, largely due to the zero export of scallop raw materials to China.
