(Jeju=Yonhap News) Reporter Go Seong-sik = The Jeju Agricultural Technology Institute urged active disease control on the 14th, stating that broccoli in Aewol-eup and Hallim-eup, the main production areas for winter vegetables, showed signs of spreading black spot and black rot diseases.
Early-maturing broccoli is experiencing black spot disease in the flower buds and black rot disease in the leaves, and early-maturing broccoli also shows initial signs of disease. The damage is spreading about two weeks earlier than usual years.
The signs of disease spread are analyzed to be due to hot and humid weather, with an average temperature last month 3.4 degrees higher than the average year and 20 days of rainfall, which is double the average year.
The Jeju Agricultural Technology Institute said that to prevent the spread of diseases, broccoli should not be planted densely and the surrounding drainage should be improved to ensure good water drainage. It also urged farmers to spray fungicides 2 to 3 times at intervals of 7 to 10 days if infection is detected early.
Diagnostic and control information for major broccoli diseases and pests can be found on the Jeju Agricultural Technology Institute website (https://agri.jeju.go.kr/agri/index.htm).
Black spot disease, caused by fungi, mainly occurs in overly moist and densely planted fields. It causes round or oval brown spots on the stems or leaf stalks, which gradually wither and die. If the flower buds are infected, black spots appear and, in severe cases, they rot, reducing marketability.
Black rot disease occurs when bacteria infect wounds caused by rain, wind, or insects. The tips of the leaves turn yellow, and in severe cases, the entire leaf turns brown.
