Jeju Island Draws Attention to New Income Crop 'Triticale'

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Agricultural Technology Institute (Director Sang-hwan Go) announced that it has confirmed the potential of triticale as a new income crop to replace imported feed crops and malting barley. According to the provincial agricultural technology institute, the current domestic feed crop cultivation area is 90,000 hectares, but the seed self-sufficiency rate is only 8%, with most Italian ryegrass and rye seeds being imported. Triticale, a hybrid of rye and wheat, has higher protein content and digestible nutrient content compared to existing feed crops, making it valuable as a feed crop, and its domestic cultivation area is increasing accordingly. Particularly, triticale is a self-pollinating crop that can be self-produced, drawing attention as a potential replacement for imported seeds, though it has limitations in the mainland due to its late harvest time at the end of June.
