Jeonnam-do province in South Korea has reported a 5.5% increase in fishery exports, totaling over $277 million in 2020, marking the fifth consecutive year of record growth. The main contributor to this growth was laver, with a 15.2% increase in exports, amounting to $167 million. Other significant exports included abalone, seaweed, tot, and flatfish. Japan and the United States were the top buyers, accounting for 43.7% and 27% of total exports, respectively. In response to the growing demand for laver, particularly during the pandemic, Jeonnam-do has initiated the 'Laver Export 300 Million Dollar Project', investing over $2.2 billion from 2021 to 2024 to enhance laver processing technology, improve quality and hygiene management, expand export markets, and boost research activities. The goal is to further increase seafood exports by providing better operating conditions and sanitary environments for production.
