In the 2022-23 agricultural season, Kazakhstan experienced a significant boost in wheat and barley production, with increases of 39% to 16.4 million tonnes and 3.3 million tonnes respectively, marking the highest wheat production since the 2017-18 season. This surge is primarily attributed to favorable weather conditions and precipitation.
The country's wheat exports saw a 31% increase, reaching 3.7 million tonnes, with Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan as the main buyers. The Foreign Agricultural Service of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) anticipates wheat and wheat flour exports to rise by 7% to 9.5 million tonnes due to enhanced production and sustained demand. Additionally, barley exports are expected to double to 900,000 tonnes, driven by increased production and hopes to reclaim market share in Iran, Uzbekistan, and China.
