The National Potato Council in Kenya is highlighting the importance of the potato crop, which supports around 2.5 million people and is the country's second most vital crop. Efforts are being made to expand and add value to the potato sector to improve food security. Potato farmers in Nyandarua and Narok County have formed cooperatives to meet consumer demand and strengthen their market negotiating power. The Cooperative University of Kenya is leading the "Kenya Rural Transformation Centers Digital Platform (KRTCDP)" initiative, which aims to improve farmer connectivity, eliminate market cartels, and increase incomes through digital platforms. The program will provide smallholder farmers with access to essential services such as inputs and public resources, and supports farmers in the potato, maize, and dairy sectors.
