Coastal Kenyan governors are working with the Empowering Farmers Foundation (EFF) to revive the dormant cashew nut value chain in order to improve the livelihoods of 350,000 smallholder farmers in Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Lamu, Taita-Taveta, and Mombasa counties. The goal is to increase cashew nut production to over 300,000 metric tonnes, valued at Sh40 billion annually by 2030. The initiative will empower farmers to shift from subsistence to semi-commercial farming, and address challenges such as old orchards, lack of specialist agronomists, and high costs of farm inputs.
