On June 1, the General Administration of Customs of China announced the approval of fresh avocado imports from Kenya, specifically the Hass variety, subject to certain phytosanitary conditions to mitigate fruit fly concerns. These conditions include methyl bromide fumigation and stringent cleaning procedures, among others, to be monitored by the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS). This development is expected to boost Kenya's avocado exports, which currently include 84,000 tons to be shipped in 2021, primarily to the United Arab Emirates, Finland, and France, but with China potentially becoming the largest market, importing up to 40% of Kenya's production.
