A total of 310 pigs in the Madakkathara panchayat of Thrissur district, India, will be culled due to confirmed African swine fever. The disease was found in pigs at a farm owned by Kattilapoovam Babu Veliyam. The district collector has ordered the district animal welfare officer to carry out the culling and disposal of the pigs, and has also implemented restrictions on the distribution of pork, operation of related shops, and transportation of pigs, pork, and fodder from the infected area. An investigation will be conducted to see if pigs from the infected farm have been transferred to other farms in the past two months, and strict inspections will be in place to prevent illegal smuggling of pork and pigs. African swine fever is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease that affects domestic and wild pigs.
