Kerala is set to become the first Indian state to establish a floor price for 16 varieties of locally grown vegetables, effective from November 1. This initiative, which aims to ensure fair compensation for growers, will set the floor price at 20% above the production cost, with purchases to be made at this price regardless of the market rate. The quality of the produce and the floor price will be rated, and this privilege will be extended to farmers with up to 15 acres of vegetable cultivation per season. Local bodies will manage the procurement and distribution, supported by funds to cover losses. The scheme also includes plans for improving the supply chain infrastructure. Since 2016, vegetable production in Kerala has seen a significant increase, with a target to further boost production by 100,000 metric tonnes this year.
