The Kerala government has decided to set a Minimum Support Price (MSP) for five additional crops following recommendations from the Commission on Agricultural Costs and Prices. These crops include yam, pumpkin, brinjal, bottle gourd, and watermelon. The MSP will be calculated based on crop productivity per hectare and will be purchased from various places including the Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam, Horticorp, eco-shops, and wholesale markets. However, farmers face challenges such as delayed payments from government agencies and complex procedures for crop insurance, pushing them to sell to middlemen. There are concerns about infrastructural challenges that procurement agencies may face if farmers increase production to benefit from the MSP.
