In 2020, Peruvian kion exports saw a significant surge, with the industry's value reaching US $106 million, a 156% increase from the previous year, as reported by the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat). The volume of shipments also rose by 116.2% to 50,649 tons. The European continent, especially the United States and the Netherlands, emerged as the primary markets, receiving over half of the total exports. This growth in kion exports occurred despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the product's growing importance in Peru's agro-export portfolio. However, the sector faces threats due to Law No. 31110, which could undermine its competitiveness and encourage informality.
