5.5 Traps Traps are fishing gear that are set in a fixed location or used for organisms that do not have a large swimming ability but are sensitive to bait. They are made by attaching nets, wire mesh, or wooden vines to frames that maintain the shape of the fishing gear using a border, instead of various fixed frames or fixed boards made of wood or wire. The traps have 1 to 4 openings on the top or side to catch the target organisms. In our country, important fishing gear include shrimp traps, crab traps, mackerel scad traps, and whelk traps, which attract target organisms using shrimp as bait, and squid traps, which attract eggs during the spawning season. These traps have been newly developed or have improved in structure and material compared to the past, and currently hold an important position in fishing.
