Paraguay's pig farming sector, which started expanding around the year 2000, has grown to include about 35,000 breeding mothers, accounting for around 10% of Argentina's and 2% of Brazil's production. The majority of this production is located in Alto Paraná and Itapúa, with Georgia and Uruguay being the main export markets since 2020, following Russia's imposition of tariffs. Domestic consumption, which is low at 7/8 kilos per capita per year, primarily in sausage form, is the sector's main support, with efforts being made to boost consumption through communication strategies and addressing misconceptions about pork. The sector is also grappling with high grain prices and is working towards better animal welfare standards, with an anticipated 20% of pigs to be under regulation by the end of 2022.
