In 2023, Kyrgyzstan has seen a significant increase in walnut imports from China, with a record-breaking 25.5 thousand tons imported in the first four months of the year. This represents a 4.3 times increase in inshell walnuts and a 3.5 times increase in walnut kernels compared to the same period last year. Despite being a traditional walnut-producing country, Kyrgyzstan has become a net importer of the nut. It is speculated that a portion of the Chinese walnuts are re-exported, and the true export flows may not be reflected in trade statistics. Kyrgyzstan typically exports most of its walnut harvest to the Russian market, as well as to Turkey, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.
