Banana exporting unions from six Latin American countries have criticized European supermarkets, particularly Germany's Kaufland, for selling bananas at prices they consider predatory and below the fair price range of €1.85 to €1.95 per kilo. This pricing strategy is seen as detrimental to sustainability efforts and compliance with certification standards in the banana industry. Despite Kaufland's participation in a sustainability project with GIZ, their pricing practices are viewed as inconsistent with a commitment to fair pricing and sustainability. During the Fourth Global Conference of the World Banana Forum, producers and exporters urged supermarkets to adopt more sustainable practices and fair pricing to ensure the industry's future viability.
