A team of experts from Colombia, Bolivia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru, and the Dominican Republic are collaborating to identify new bean varieties that are drought-tolerant, with secondary attributes such as soil pathogen tolerance and biofortification. The initiative, backed by the Government of Korea, aims to replace commercial bean types and offer training to producing communities, particularly indigenous associations. The project will also develop a nursery with drought-tolerant materials and evaluate existing materials for potential use. The effort addresses concerns about food security and malnutrition in the region due to climatic variations and the expected increase in dry years, with bean shortage being a significant issue.
