Tridge summary

A Supreme Court lawyer in Bangladesh has served a legal notice to the government seeking a ban on the export of hilsa, the national fish, to India within the next seven days. The notice, issued to several ministries and departments, argues that the exports have led to a surge in the local price of the fish, making it inaccessible to the poor and a luxury for the middle class. The lawyer asserts that the export of hilsa, which is not freely exportable according to the Bangladesh Export Policy 2021-24, is unjust and goes against public interest. The lawyer has threatened to file a writ petition in the High Court if the exports are not halted.
