In 2023, the global and Ukrainian raw milk supply faced significant challenges due to adverse weather, macroeconomic factors, and the ongoing war with Russia, leading to a decrease in milk production and cow population in Ukraine. Despite these challenges, Ukraine's industrial sector managed to restore raw milk production to pre-war levels, although the country experienced a 6% drop in production and a 6% reduction in cow numbers compared to the previous year, with a 22% decrease over two years of conflict. Ukrainian processing enterprises adapted by exclusively using extra grade milk, in compliance with European standards, as mandated by Order 118. The dynamics of raw milk purchase prices saw fluctuations, with an average annual price increase of 14% in Ukraine, amidst a forecasted continuation of raw milk shortages into 2024 due to various factors including lack of investment and wartime emigration.
