Turkey: Lettuce shipping from Bilecik to Istanbul

Lettuce produced in the fields and greenhouses in Bilecik's Söğüt and İnhisar districts and the Sakarya Basin is harvested and sent to the surrounding metropolitan cities. Producers of lettuce, most of which is grown in two districts with microclimates and sent to markets and market tradesmen in Istanbul, have started harvesting. Workers work "greenery" shifts in the greenhouses in Çaltı, Geçitli, Hamitabat, Yakacık and Koyunlu villages in Söğüt's Sakarya Valley. According to the data of the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, lettuce is planted in an area of approximately 4 thousand 750 decares per year in Bilecik. Of the 47 million lettuce roots produced on average annually, 39 million roots are sent to Istanbul. Within the scope of the "Enabling the Use of Agricultural Lands Project", the Directorate provided support to 150 farmers and their greenhouse covers were renewed.
