The LIFE Resilience project, funded by the EU LIFE program, is working to develop Xylella fastidiosa-resistant olive varieties and prevent the spread of the pathogen in high-density olive and almond farms. The Institute of Bioeconomy of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR IBE) is leading the effort, with a focus on understanding the population dynamics of two vectors, Philaenuss pumarius and Neophilae nuscampestris, in olive groves. The project has also looked into the effectiveness of Beauveriabassiana for controlling vector nymphs and the role of nymphal foam in protecting nymphs from predators. Other strategies include increasing biodiversity and using plant coverings against Xylella fastidiosa. The project also involves using auxiliary fauna in crop plots and planting typical Tuscan varieties to create green corridors.
