Bulgarian livestock farmers are protesting against the duty-free import of animal products from Ukraine, demanding that it cease to protect local farmers. They are suffering as the cost of selling milk has fallen significantly, reaching BGN 0.60-0.75/l for cow's milk, BGN 1/l for buffalo milk, and BGN 0.95-1.20/l for sheep's milk. This is unsustainable, especially with the cost of concentrated feed. Farmers are struggling to survive, with some already bankrupt, and are considering unionizing or closing the loop with a mini-dairy. If the EU extends its decision for duty-free imports from Ukraine for another year, farmers may be forced to request the state to cover costs through regulation, or change the farming team and seek intervention from EU experts.
