The fishing industry in Nova Scotia is seeing a surge in safety consciousness, with more fishers signing up for voluntary safety training and taking part in preseason safety meetings. The demand for the Wheelhouse Safety Logbook Tutorial, developed by Fish Safe NS in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Fisheries Sector Council, has led to the attendance of about 350 fishers since its introduction. The organization also offers forklift training, WHMIS Training, and plans to develop a vessel stability program. Rebates are provided for life raft inspections, purchase of immersion suits and PFDs, and efforts are being made to improve the comfort of PFDs.
