A study conducted by Penn State University, led by I.L.B. Fernandes, investigated the effect of lung consolidation at weaning on the average daily gain (ADG) of 145 beef × Holstein calves. The research, presented at the 2024 Tri-State Dairy Conference, included calves from two dairies raised in three cohorts, with health assessments and thoracic ultrasonography scans to evaluate lung consolidation. The study found a significant interaction between lung consolidation severity and the period post-weaning, indicating that while there was no difference in ADG in the immediate post-weaning period, calves with more severe lung consolidation experienced slower growth in the following period. However, by 238 days of age, the growth deficit had been compensated, suggesting that lung consolidation at weaning has minimal long-term impact on calf growth.
