Luxembourg fruit tree population is declining

It is estimated that there are almost 200,000 fruit-bearing trees in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. According to Natur&Ëmwelt, an organization dedicated to the protection of biodiversity in a varied natural and cultural landscape, there are 700 varieties in Luxembourg. The Reinette apple, for example, has been growing in Luxembourg since the 19th century, making it one of the oldest known fruit trees in the country. In the coming years, however, some of these 700 varieties are in danger of disappearing if measures are not taken proactively to plant more young trees.
