Maharashtra has surpassed Uttar Pradesh as the leading sugar producer in India, producing over 100 lakh tonnes by the end of March, while UP's production reached 96 lakh tonnes. Both states are projected to produce around 105-107 lakh tonnes of sugar by the end of the season. The difference in production is due to UP's higher cane cultivation area, a more productive cane variety, and a decline in production due to red rot disease. In contrast, Maharashtra's increased production is attributed to higher productivity and the switching of grape farmers to sugar cane. The close race in sugar production is expected to continue in the next season.
