Malaysia expects to begin exporting fresh durians to China in the third quarter of 2024, following the signing of a protocol during Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s visit to Malaysia in June. The protocol stipulates that only farms and packing facilities that register with the Department of Agriculture, comply with myGAP standards, and receive approval from China's General Administration of Customs can export. The Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, stated that the registration approval process is expected to take two to three months. In 2022, durians contributed 58.6% of Malaysia’s fruit export value of RM2.01 billion, with China being the primary export market.
