Durian farmers in Malaysia are expecting to pass on a significant price increase to consumers due to a sharp decrease in production. The production drop is attributed to two main factors: the high cost of fertilizers resulting from the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the economic impact of the port of Shanghai's lockdown. Heavy rainfall has also caused a substantial reduction in the harvest of popular durian varieties in Penang, Johor, and Pahang, with Musang King and Black Thorn varieties seeing a drop of 60-80%.
