Mato Grosso is expected to plant less cotton in 2025/26

According to the weekly analysis released by the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) on Monday (15), the 2025/26 cotton crop in Mato Grosso should register the first reduction in cultivated area in five years. The Institute reports that the initial projection indicates a contraction after consecutive cycles of expansion, marking a change in the recent behavior of the crop in the state. According to Imea, the estimated area is 1.43 million hectares, a decrease of 7.28% compared to the 2024/25 crop and the first reduction since the 2020/21 cycle. The Institute stresses that there are still factors of uncertainty that may alter this scenario, especially the development of the soybean crop and the pace of harvesting, which directly influence the sowing calendar for the second cotton crop.
