The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a surplus of sturgeon in Vietnamese farms due to reduced consumption, which has been worsened by an infestation of Chinese sturgeon smuggled into the country. Between July 2020 and February 2021, 2,988 tons of Chinese sturgeon were imported, labeled as being from Lam Dong or Sapa, despite being priced lower and being of lower quality than Vietnamese sturgeon. This has negatively impacted the domestic sturgeon farming industry and poses a risk to consumer health. The General Department of Customs has been instructed to check imported sturgeon consignments and enforce regulations, and the Vietnam Fisheries Association is calling for a strategy for cold-water fish production. The market is expanding with new products, but low-quality Chinese sturgeon is causing competition for Vietnamese-farmed sturgeon.
