Mexico's craft beer industry is seeking a reduction in the country's high alcohol tax rates, which are among the highest in the world. The Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) is currently 26.5%, and it increases the final price for consumers, making it difficult for craft breweries to compete against large industrial brewing companies. The tax rate also varies depending on the alcohol content, with rates up to 53% for beverages over 20 degrees of alcohol. This high tax rate also hinders the export of craft beer, particularly to the US. Despite these challenges, the craft beer industry in Mexico has seen significant growth, expanding by 16.3% last year and expected to surpass four thousand businesses in 2025.
