Peru's Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Jennifer Contreras, has declared the 'International Year of Camelids', highlighting the significance of camelid breeding, production, conservation, and commercialization for the country's economic sustainability and genetic biodiversity. Peru, being the world's top producer of alpaca and vicuña fiber and home to the largest camelid population, relies on this sector as the main agricultural economic activity for over 90,000 families. An investment of 1,200 million soles has been allocated for 2024-2027 to bolster activities related to camelids, benefiting more than 90,000 producers.
